and HE smote . . .
. . . My car!
Seriously!
Hello? Car insurance broker person? Ya, I'm in the parking lot at work, and um, my car got hit by lightning.
There was a massive thunder storm today. I was covering reception for lunch and when I looked up, the sky was so black I thought something must be on fire.
Nope - severe thunderstorm warnings. It hadn't started to rain as yet, so everyone was making the mad dash to make sure their car windows were up.
Me, I go out with my camera. Sadly, these pictures do not capture the feeling of impending doom ominous feeling or heaviness of the black clouds that quickly spread across the sky.
Shortly after this, lightning struck one of these flag poles, a power transformer on the building and apparently, the antenna on my car.
I didn't know about the car until much later. We merrily continued working after all of the hourly plant staff had been told to go home for the day. No transformer, no power in the building. Emergency power to the phones and lights for a few hours. Customer service had to stay - we are salary you see. We get paid if we are there or not.
We worked with pen, paper and calculators on a big project I've been working on since last week. Personally, I think it was pointless.
Oh, back to the car. It's hatchback and bright blue, as you can see. I got in my car, turned it on and couldn't figure out why it would not b-u-d-g-e from park. I then realized everything that could lights up on the dash, was, and that there was something wrong.
Lightening never entered my mind, 'till I got out and realized there was no antenna on my car. After working in the dark from around 12:30 there were a few people standing around in the lot still. Thankfully! I walked over and said, I think my car's been hit by lightening.
(enter peels of laughter here and many jokes at my, or rather my poor car's expense)
I gathered a crowed of curious on-lookers and two plant electricians who turned on the car and looked under the hood.
Got to be a capacitor. Probably the computer. It's a wonder it turns over. Wonder what else is fried. You opened this with the power? Must be running on the battery. Amazing.
Amazing is this bit of remaining antenna - it was on the ground about 15 feet away. I found the very end of my antenna a little while later with some fried wires standing out of it. Did I mention that my antenna was about 2 feet tall?
I got a ride home from Liz, who kindly let me stop in at the grocery store so I could get "comfort food" in the form of a tub of ice cream something highly nutricious for dinner.
I called both my insurance broker (before I even left the parking lot AND it was before 5 AND I got someone AND it's now after 8 AND I still haven't gotten a call back) and the dealership. The guy that answered the phone at the dealership - he laughed too. Then he told me to go and buy a lottery ticket. Hmn.
I don't know if I should laugh (although I have been) or if I should cry. My Mum kindly pointed out that she hopes my insurance doesn't go up. Doesn't this qualify as an "act of God?" I hope that He can pay my deductible too - cuz I don't happen to have any spare cash lying around.

Oh my gosh! that's crazy! glad you're safe and sound though!
my grandpa's porch once got hit by lightning and caught fire... It was really good that the rain put it out because he would have just slept right through it.
Whaaaaat?!?! That is so crazy.
It definately counts as an act of god.
Wow! Thankfully you weren't in it at the time!
I'm glad to hear you're getting some treatment. Is yours rheumatoid arthritis or something else? I HATE when I can't do things because of the pain, or just because my body won't function the way it should.
And Bogey in his lifejacket; too funny! My Shephard used to love the water but my pit wouldn't go in. I did know a guy whos pit would dive for rocks and bring them back! lol And no, I haven't had any dogs for about 9 years now; just two cats.
At least you weren't in the car at the time!
Yikes! I hope the insurance guy gives you an upgrade on your car and no deductible to worry about.
Hey! Why not dream big?
Seriously, not a good weather day in London, fer sur.
Thanks everyone! You're comments made me feel better about a (sort of) crappy situation.
Wow... people always say that cars don't get hit by lightening, because the rubber tires insulate the car from the ground. Guess that's not true!
Hey, man. I'm sorry to hear about your car, but that's so ... funny. It sucks, but there's nothing you can do now.
Be glad that you weren't in the car!
Oh, yeah. I'm here from boingboing.net
It's a myth that cars don't get struck by lightening. They do, but the tires insulate you from the ground. if lightning is strong enough to get from the sky to your car, it's strong enough to get from your car to the ground.
What really saves you is the fact that most cars form what's called a "faraday cage" where the electricity is dissipated through the body and metalwork of the car. Keeps you safe but fries the car.
Tell the insurance company that you're an athiest and that you know that god doesn't make lightning any more than he might make one car crash into another. It probably won't work but it's worth a shot.
Dude, this blog entry was boingboinged: http://www.boingboing.net/2006/07/26/lightning_blows_ante.html
Sorry about your luck. I rode out the storm yesterday in my car. It got scary pretty damned quick.
(From BoingBoing, also from SE of London)
It happened to a friend of mine. He's an amature radio operator. It struck his 2meter antenna and took out his entire jeep wrangler. Mind you I belive his car was running at the time it happened.

Holy mackerel!! At least it was your car that was struck and not you, though!
well technically, if you were in the car when the lightening struck, you'd be totally safe, because th tires are supposed to act as a grounding against it.
Read that in school though... don't know exactly how much of it is ACTUALLY true!
Lucky you though! :-)
> because the tires are supposed to act as a
> grounding against it.
This is wrong and I hope this isn't something they teach at your school.
The car acts as a faraday cage which keeps the lightning outside and the people in the car quite safe.
This has got nothing to do with the tires - especially when they are wet. Spanning the air gap from car to earth is significantly easier than spanning the air gap from the clouds to the car...

You should be more careful.
That lightning is dangerous, from what I hear.

At least you're alright...and hopefully your insurance company will get a clue and call you back. I get the feeling that it is going to be an expensive repair though.
HEY! I just happen to know how you can replace your car ... get a RED PAPER CLIP and trade it up to a new car!
Seriously, tho ... glad you weren't driving it at the time!
If the insurance covers it, don't let them skimp. Eletrical gremlins can take forever to show up. So much in cars today is controlled by electronics, and on yours all are potentially fried. As for the 'faraday cage' and 'Tires insulating you' I have to weigh in; You are ok if you get hit by lightning while IN the car because the metal body AND the tires conduct the electricity TO ground. the ground just happens to be THE ground. Get it? Tire's don't conduct you say? Actually tires have so much carbon in them they happily conduct high voltages like lightening (and static electricity). that's why when a tire company found they could make tires out of silicone based rubber that had great wet grip characteristics, they had to put a small strip of conductive material in the tread. The test tires kept causing so much static build up that people would get really nasty zaps on exiting the car. That's why when you get out of your car on a dry winter day wearing your polar fleece, you get a static shock when you go to close the door of the car. It builds up from the fabrics rubbing together then the car conducts it away from you. Why would I bother to know any of this? As a firefighter I was taugh that if your ladder truck contacts power lines you STAY on the truck until they de-energize the lines. If you have to get away (say it's on fire!) then you JUMP off as far as you can. You don't want to become the path to ground.

Keep the car, lightning never strikes the same place twice, tell the insurance company that you have to have a discount on the insurance fee.

Got here from Boing Boing.
That is insane :(
Has the insurance company contacted you already?
On the bright side, you now have all the commute time to do knitting!
Haha... Is that a VW Golf/GTI?

just make sure you park in the same space every day...
Damn, that sucks, sorry to hear about your plight. However it was a good photo essay.

I guess we're part of a club! I just got hit today (8/19) while driving on the interstate in the lightning capital of the world, Tampa, Fl. The remnants of my antenna looked just like yours. It sounded like a firecracker going off and left a smell like an electrical fire. I'll have to take a pic and send it to you. Crazy stuff huh?
Interesting point from anonymous. What kind of car is yours. Mine is a 2003 VW Passat... before they switched to the current stubby antenna.
It was a Mazda Protege 5 hatch back. I'm going to make sure that I never buy a car with an antena that sticks out like that again.
Glad you're ok Gilbert!
Ditto Knitty Kat... glad all is well with you. Did your insurance cover the damage? I suppose it happens more often over here in my location. My insurance company called me right away.
Yes and no. I had to go after them. In the end, they made the car company happy. I'm still not entirely sure if I am going to pay Mazda anything - I haven't heard from them at all. It was a lease, btw.
I see. So you don't have the car anymore?
actually, the insurance company wrote it off - the story continues in following posts. The strike fried EVERYTHING in my car - and I mean everything. Not worth fixing.

Does the antenna look familiar? Tomorrow I find out if I need to start shopping for a new car...
